The Pharmaceutical Value Chain

Ensuring access to safe, effective and quality-assured medicines, including controlled medicines, requires a comprehensive approach across the pharmaceutical value chain. There are critical steps in the value chain from the development of medicines, to their appropriate use by patients.

For controlled medicines to be available and accessible to the patients who need them, it is essential that good practices are in place at each stage of the value chain.

WHO works with countries and other stakeholders from the private sector and civil society to improve and strengthen the entirety of the pharmaceutical system.
